I think what he means is that as a defender, you rotate around the basket like a fan opens… as if you move parallel to the three point line, back and forth, but you always have the basket in the middle of your back and if a string is atttached to you and the basket, then it rotates in the shape of a fan…

fanning out means fanning out to shooters, on my fast breaks or secondary break situations we’re taught to protect the lane first then “fan” out to our man…that is what the term fan means to me @UCIBrianBui
